Early Life
Sheryl Lee Ralph was born on 30th December 1956 in Waterbury, Connecticut to Stanley Ralph, a college professor, and Ivy Ralph O.D., a Jamaican fashion designer and the inventor of the Kariba suit.
She is descended from the Tikar people of Cameroon and grew up in Mandeville, Jamaica, and Long Island. She also has a younger brother, actor and comedian Michael Ralph. However, Ralph’s passion for performing led her to pursue a career in the arts instead of medicine.
Career
Ralph attended Uniondale High School in Uniondale, New York, where she performed in a high school production of Oklahoma! , as Ado Annie, and graduated in 1972. She had previously been crowned Miss Black Teenage New York.
Ralph who graduated from Rutgers University at the age of 19 was the school’s first female student to receive the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. She was also one of the school’s inaugural students to receive the award.
Glamour magazine also named Ralph one of the top ten college women in America that year. She originally planned to study medicine, but after handling cadavers in a pre-med class and winning a scholarship at the American College Theater Festival.
She decided to pursue the performing arts instead. Many years later, she was the Rutgers Class of 2003 commencement speaker. Ralph made her cinematic debut in 1977 with the comedy film A Piece of the Action.
Breakthrough
She started out in the theatre in the 1977 Broadway musical “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” which won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Her breakthrough role was as Deena Jones in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, for which she received a Primetime Emmy and an Independent Spirit Award.
In 1984, Ralph released her only album, In the Evening, and the title single hit No. 6 on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles list that same year. In 1991, she was awarded the Independent Spirit Award for her performance in the drama film To Sleep with Anger.
Other films in which she has appeared include The Mighty Quinn, The Distinguished Gentleman, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, and Deterrence. She featured in the syndicated sitcom It’s a Living from 1986-1989, and then in the ABC sitcom New Attitude and the CBS medical drama Street Gear.
She played Dee Mitchell in the sitcom Moesha from 1996-2001, and Maggie Turner in the Nick at Nite series Instant Mom from 2013-2015. In 2012, Ralph wrote an autobiography titled Redefining Diva: Life Lessons and appeared on Broadway as Madame Morrible in Wicked in 2016.

Ralph is presently starring in Abbott Elementary for which she won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards for her role-making history as the first black woman to do so in 35 years.
