Early Life
Ann Leslie Turner was born on November 20, 1926, in Westport, Connecticut. Her father, Leslie Turner was an artist who for decades drew the Captain Easy comic strip. During her childhood, her family relocated to Orlando, Florida.
She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a bachelor’s degree in English and the University of South Florida with a master’s degree in English education.
Gerber Baby
Gerber’s famous baby image, which has appeared on practically all Gerber baby food packaging since 1931, was inspired by Ann Turner Cook. Until 1978, her true identity was kept hidden
Dorothy Hope Smith, a neighbor of Gerber’s family, created a charcoal drawing of Ann when she was a baby. Smith’s drawing was presented and selected when Gerber advertised its next line of baby food in 1928 which got registered in 1931.
