Early Life
Ashley Ciminella Judd was born in Los Angeles on April 19, 1968, and raised in Kentucky. She is the daughter of Naomi Judd, a country music singer and motivational speaker, and Michael Ciminella, a horse racing marketing analyst.
Judd’s parents split in 1972, and the following year she returned to her mother’s hometown of Kentucky. Her mother was a stay-at-home mom at the time of her birth, and she didn’t start singing professionally until the early 1980s.
Before college, Judd attended 13 different institutions, notably Ashland, Kentucky’s Paul G. Blazer High School, and Franklin, Tennessee’s Franklin High School. She majored in French. She minored in anthropology, art history, drama, and women’s studies at the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. As part of her degree program, she spent a semester in France.
She drove to Hollywood after graduation to study acting at Playhouse West with Robert Carnegie, a renowned acting coach. Judd enrolled at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley in 2016 to pursue a Ph.D. in Public Policy.
Due to chronic migraines, she took a medical leave two months later. Judd graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in 2007. In 2009, Union College, Kentucky bestowed upon her an Honorary DHL degree.

Judd played Ensign Robin Lefler on ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ in the episodes “Darmok” and “The Game.” She also played Reed, Alex’s (Swoosie Kurtz) daughter, in the NBC drama Sisters, in a regular role.
