Early Life
Cain Ramirez Velasquez was born on the 28th of July, 1982 in Salinas, California, to parents Efrain and Isabel Velasquez. Efrain had come to the United States as an illegal immigrant from Sonora, Mexico, where he met Isabel, a native of the United States.
They began dating and later married, allowing Efrain to become a citizen of the United States. Efrain Jr, Adela, and Cain Velasquez were the Velasquez family’s three children. Velasquez was born in Yuma, Arizona, and reared there.
Education and Early Career
He was a four-year wrestler at Kofa High School, where he went 110–10 and twice won the 5A Arizona Wrestling Championship. For three years, Velasquez also played football. He was the wrestling and football teams’ captains as a senior. He used to be a linebacker in football.
He wrestled for one season at Iowa Central Community College after high school, capturing the NJCAA National Championship in the heavyweight division in 2001-2002. After that, Velasquez headed to Arizona State University.
He wrestled for the Sun Devils for three seasons, with an 86–17 record and finishing fifth in the nation in 2005 and fourth in 2006. Velasquez wrestled with future UFC fighters Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway at ASU. He earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies from ASU in 2006.
Career
Following graduation, Velasquez began training at the American Kickboxing Academy. He debuted in mixed martial arts in 2006, defeating esse Fujarczyk in the first round via TKO. Velasquez subsequently faced Jeremiah Constant, who was unbeatable at the time.
He won by TKO in the first round. At UFC 83 in 2008, he fought Brad Morris for the first time. In the first round, he defeated his opponent by TKO. The next year, he competed against Jake O’Brien at UFC Fight Night 14.
Velasquez took the opening round via TKO. Velasquez’s impressive victory secured him a rematch against ongoing UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. In that encounter, he nearly ripped his rotator cuff.
