Early Life
Charles Allan Hill was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 6, 1951, to Eileen and Norbert and migrated to the Oneida Indian reserve with his family in 1962. He had a brother, Jimmy.
He finished school at West De Pere High School in 1969 and went on to study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he majored in speech and theatre and was a member of the Broom Street Theatre Group.
He was a part of Hanay Geiogomah’s Native American Theatre Group in the 1970s. The group played Coyote Tracks and Foghorn at Manhattan’s La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club.
Charlie Hill also toured Germany In 1973 and the U.S. the following year. Charlie Hill shifted to Los Angeles after graduation and started working as an actor and comedian.
Hill co-hosted the First Americans in the Arts awards event in Hollywood 3 times. He performed stand-up comedy in worldwide venues and was frequent at The Comedy Store in Hollywood.
Career
Hill made his network debut in 1977 on The Richard Pryor Show, and he has since been on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Late Night with David Letterman, and Jay Leno.
Hill starred in the short film, Harold of Orange (1984) and was a subject of On and Off The Res with Charlie Hill (1999). He was interviewed for the documentary A Good Day to Die about American Indian Movement activist Dennis Banks.
Personal Life
He married Lenora Hatathlie. They had four kids, Dine’ Nizhoni, Nasbah, Nanabah and Nabahe. In Oneida, Wisconsin, the United States, he passed away on December 30, 2013, of Lymphoma.
