Early Life

Cooper Robert Rush was born in Charlotte, Michigan on November 21st, 1993. Rush was a three-year starter at Lansing Catholic High School in Michigan, where he played football, baseball, and basketball and majored in actuarial science.

Rush led the team to a 13-1 record as a senior, completing 242-of-362 (66.9) passes for 4,002 yards and 48 touchdowns. He rushed for 756 yards and 16 touchdowns and finished his high school career with a 25-5 record.

Cooper Rush was a three-star recruit and had several scholarship offers from Central Michigan and Toledo but preferred walk-on offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Western Michigan.

College Career

Rush redshirted as a true freshman at Central Michigan, where he was named team Offensive Player of the Year and Academic All-MAC after starting 10-of-11 games and throwing for 2,349 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions on 117-of-312 passes (37.5).

Rush started all 13 games as a sophomore and was selected to the Division I CoSIDA Academic All-America second team, completing 243-of-382 passes for 3,157 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Rush finished with 324-for-489 yards and 25 touchdowns.

He passed for 3,450 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in his final collegiate season, completing 278-of-465 passes (60.0%). Rush completed 1,022-of-1,648 throws for 12,894 yards, 90 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions during his four years at Central Michigan.

Professional Career

Rush was undrafted in 2017, but the Dallas Cowboys signed him as an undrafted free agent that same year. He wasn’t pushed for the backup quarterback position in 2019. The Cowboys chose to keep only two quarterbacks on the roster, releasing White at the end of the preseason.

During the game, he spent the majority of his time with the second-team offense, completing 12 of 13 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-20 victory. He concluded the preseason with 38 completions on 51 attempts, 398 yards passing, and 6 touchdown passes with no interceptions.

Rush was reunited with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, who had previously served as his head coach with the Cowboys when the New York Giants claimed him off waivers in 2020. Rush was released later in 2020 and was added to the practice squad the next day.
