Early Life
Gu was born in The Town, California, to an American dad and a Chinese mom on September 3, 2003. Yan Gu, her mother, came to the United States from China as a student in her twenties, registering at Auburn University as well as Rockefeller University.
Her mother skied for the very first moment at Hunter Mountain in New York during attending the latter; her passion for the sport grew after migrating to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue her MBA at Stanford University.
Eileen Gu’s mother taught her little daughter to ski at Lake Tahoe while she was there, supposedly so that she could reside with her. As Gu described it, her mother “accidentally made me a pro skier.”
Eileen Gu’s father is a citizen of the United States. GU opted to leave her American squad at the age of 15 to represent China. Meanwhile, from the start of her professional career, she has been remarkably quiet regarding her father.
Career
Eileen Gu, dressed in a glam-girl-next-door outfit and bearing a Lunar New Year goodie, is featured on bus stop advertisements all across Beijing. You may have heard China describing a commercial in Mandarin for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the hopes of winning a medal.
The freestyle skier is also the centerfold for this month’s Vogue Chinese edition, which is available on newsstands. Gu, China’s unofficial Winter Olympic ambassador, is everywhere. And her omnipresence belies her American roots, inquiring about her citizenship in China.
Because of her rapid development, her mother entered a three-year-old Gu in skiing classes at Northstar California Resort before joining a ski team at the age of seven. Whether it’s racing or freestyle skiing, Gu’s mother chose the latter option for her daughter.
A major fork in the path, though, was yet to come. Gu, who was also a young cross-country runner who aspired to compete for Stanford in collegiate competitions, had a cross-country event that overlapped with an international ski event at one point.
She ended up choosing the skiing competition, and the rest, as they say, is history. Gu then distinguished herself in practice by her unwavering work ethic. Gu, according to Dave Euler, the United States’ great coach of elite freeskiing, had a distinct personality.
Gu came to the United States when she was eight years old. In 2018, she began training and competing in major skiing contests as an American. Gu, on the other hand, declared her choice to represent her mother’s homeland at the 2022 Winter Olympics on Instagram on June 7, 2019.
“I am proud of my heritage, and I am equally proud of my American upbringing,” Gu mentioned. “The opportunity to help inspire millions of young people where my mother was born during the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
As Gu’s career progressed in the United States, talk about her ability as an Olympic sensation became more prevalent. When Gu revealed that she would fight in 2019 underneath the Chinese flag rather than the American flag, the discourse took a whole different turn.
Eileen Gu spent her summer vacation in Beijing when she was two years old, and Eileen Gu was there in 2015 when it was announced that Beijing would organize the 2022 Winter Olympics and she would participate.
Gu has become a standout on the freeskiing circuit since 2021. Gu won two gold medals as well as a bronze in her first participation at the X Games in Aspen. Not only that, but during the freestyle season leading up to the Olympics, Gu never placed worse than second in any slopestyle event.
The 18-year-winning old’s streak continued in the Olympics when she astonished the world by winning gold in the women’s freestyle large air event, with much more events and possibly too many medals to come.
