Early Life

Horacio Pagani was born in Casilda, Argentina on 10th November 1955. His Italian great-grandfather immigrated to Argentina from the Como province. His father, Luca was an Italian-born baker and his mother was an artist.

While still residing in his home country, he developed an interest in engineering. Pagani got plenty of inspiration from the vehicles in the neighborhood, as well as the occasional automotive magazine from Italy.

He recalls chasing down a local man’s 1963 Jaguar E-Type on his bicycle when he was eight years old, just to sit and look at it for hours while it was parked. Pagani began creating at the age of ten, first sketching and then carving model cars out of wood.

However, he knew from the start that the rural town where he was born would be insufficient for the engineering career he desired. At the age of 12, he took shelter in his small room, where he built models of sports cars out of balsa wood and chocolate can cuttings.

He built a motorcycle at the age of 15 and rode it across his hometown of Casilda. He moved to La Plata to pursue Fine Arts while also taking engineering courses. He designed and constructed his first F3 racer at the age of 20.

Career Beginnings

Pagani started a small shop where he worked at an early age, obtaining valuable experience in craftsmanship. At the age of 23, Pagani built a Formula 2 vehicle for the official Renault team. His mentor, Oreste Berta, a well-known racing car coach, introduced him to visit Juan Manuel Fangio.

He listened to his ideas and wrote five letters to the top Italian sports car manufacturers. Ferrari ignored but Lamborghini on the other hand did not. He began his career in the automotive industry as an employee of Lamborghini in the late 1970s.

Breakthrough

Pagani’s breakthrough as a talented engineer occurred when he was hired by Renault to enhance the body of a racing car. After achieving success on a small scale, he was employed by Lamborghini and began by sweeping the floor, but he worked his way up the corporation.

Pagani rose to the position of head engineer, developing the Countach Evoluzione concept while also working on the Diablo and the P140. He attempted to persuade Lamborghini to purchase an autoclave in order to increase the manufacturing of carbon parts for the Evoluzione.

They refused, claiming that because Ferrari did not have an autoclave, Lamborghini did not require one. Pagani borrowed the money to buy his own autoclave late in 1987, and then, in 1991, he left the firm.

He then created his own consultancy called “Modena Design” in San Cesario Sul Panaro, which would subsequently become the Pagani Automobili, a small manufacturing producing craft automobiles.

His first car, the Zonda, took 7 years to complete it was supposed to be called Fangio F1, but it was finished after the death of the Argentinean driver, so Pagani chose to call it Zonda which was named after the wind-blowing over the Andes.

He presented it to the world at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show. Many unique editions of Zonda were created and sold for far over EUR 1 million. At a point in time, a client paid 15 million euros for a Zonda HP Barchetta of which Pagani only made three.

In 2013, a Zonda Revolucion version was introduced, equipped with an 800 horsepower AMG V12 and priced at an extravagant EUR 2.2 million. Its Pagani Zonda 760 Coupé limited edition was highly sought after and Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has one.

In 2011, his second car, the Huayra was built which was influenced by sport prototype cars and was named after Huayra Tata, the god of the wind in Incan tradition. The company has produced several other models, including the Huayra, which was introduced in 2011.
