Early Life and Education
On March 22, 1947, James Brendan Patterson was born in Newburgh, New York, to Charles and Isabelle Patterson. Isabelle was a schoolteacher and Charles was an insurance salesman. When James was a child, his entire family relocated to Boston, where he lived in a poorhouse.
He began reading while pursuing his B.A. in English at Manhattan College in the Bronx, and after encouragement from family and friends, he began writing, a hobby that would become his lifelong fascination.
James worked as an attendant at ‘Mclean Hospital’ in Belmont during the night shifts as a youngster to cover expenses for his higher education. He went to Vanderbilt University in Tennessee to pursue a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English literature after finishing college.
He dropped out after only a year because he believed his academics would kill his passion for literature and that the Ph.D. Itself was of little importance to him. He moved to New York City in 1971.
After being turned down for a cab driver job due to his long hair, he joined a leading advertising agency, as a junior copywriter. He began writing commercial fiction in the mornings before heading to work.
During his lunch break at work, inspired by books such as “The Exorcist” and “The Day of the Jackal.” He wrote his debut novel, ‘The Thomas Berryman Number,’ at the age of 26 and had it rejected by 31 publishers before being published by ‘Little, Brown and Company in 1976.
Career
“Against Medical Advice” was published in 2008, “The Murder of King Tut” was published in 2009, “The Rise and Fall of Aaron Hernandez, the Superstar Whose Life Ended on Murderers’ Row” appeared in 2018, the next was “The Last Days of John Lennon” in 2020.
In the “Discovery’s Murder is Forever” series, he has published numerous paperback books. The book titled “The President Is Missing,” penned by James and Bill Clinton, was published in 2018. Patterson registered a 17-book agreement with HarperCollins in 2009.
He promised to publish or co-author six young adult fiction and 11 adult novels by the end of 2012. Despite “Forbes” reports that the contract was worth $150 million, James has stated that this is not the case.
The James Patterson PageTurner Awards were founded in 2005 to give away “cash prizes meant to recognize the individuals, corporations, schools, and other institutions who develop creative and efficient ways to promote the joy of reading books.”
