Early Life
John Earl Madden was born on 10 April 1936 in Austin. His parents were Earl Russell Madden and Mary Margaret Madden. His father was a mechanic and the family had migrated to California when Madden was a child.
He did his schooling at a Catholic Parochial school and then graduated from high school in 1954 at Jefferson High school. He always wanted to be a football player, however as destiny turned out he ended up coaching football teams.
Career
Madden wanted to be a football player and used to play football in high school. While studying at San Mateo he used to play football and had to back out due to a knee injury. He went on to play for the Mustangs at Car Poly.
He was then drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but during his training period, he injured his other knee in the training camp. Therefore, he never got to play football professionally. In 1960, he became the assistant coach at Allan Hancock College.
In 1963, he was appointed as the defensive assistant coach at San Diego State. Later he was hired by the Oakland Raiders in 1967 as the linebackers coach. Two years down, when the head coach of the Raiders retired, Madden was made the head coach.
At the age of 39, Madden became one of the youngest head coaches and under his training Raiders reached Super Bowl II that season making Madden one of the best football coaches in the history of the Raiders team.
He even became the youngest coach to reach 100 career regular victories. From 1979 to 2003, Madden worked as a commentator on all the major American Television Networks CBS Sports, Fox Sports, ABC Sports, and NBC Sports.
He even went on to air Westwood One radio network in the USA. He even featured in movies like Christine and Little Giants. He has been honored with many awards the most prominent one of them is being featured in the Pro football hall of fame.
