Richards was born on September 19, 1964, in New York and is the daughter of Kathleen Mary and her second husband, Kenneth Edwin Richards. Her parents separated in 1972 and her mother remarried again later.

Personal Life
Richards got married to Monty Brinson in 1985, who was an heir to a supermarket franchise and was a professional poker player. They have a daughter together. However, they divorced in 1988.
The same year she married Gregg Davis, the son of the petroleum tycoon, Marvin Davis, and Barbara Davis. They had two children together, a daughter and a son. They also divorced soon after in 1991.
Richards then began to date the salesman John J. Collett, who was a popular figure in a criminal activity that resulted in losses worth $150 million. He was however murdered, shot twice, and killed by a hitman who was paid a ransom of $30,000.
