Natalie Renee McIntyre, better known by her stage name Macy Gray, was born on September 6, 1967, in Canton, Ohio. Laura McIntyre, Macy’s mother, was a math teacher, and Otis Jones, Macy’s father, was an insurance salesman who abandoned his family when she was a youngster.
Macy revealed that she was closer to her stepfather than she was to her actual father when her mother remarried. Gray was singing and creating songs by the time she was a scriptwriter at the University of Southern California.
She met a producer named Joe Solo while working as a cashier, and he helped her write songs and record them at his studio. Later, Macy began singing in Los Angeles jazz cafés and was signed by Atlanta Records.
