Early Life

On February 19, 1959, Roger Stokoe Goodell was born in Jamestown, New York, to United States Senator Charles Ellsworth Goodell and his first wife, Jean (Rice) Goodell of Buffalo, New York.

Goodell graduated from Bronxville High School, where he captained all three teams as a senior and was voted the school’s athlete of the year as a three-sport star in football, basketball, and baseball.

Roger Goodell was unable to play collegiate football due to injuries. Goodell earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington & Jefferson College in 1981 and then went on to pursue his career as a Football player.

Career

Roger began his NFL career as an unpaid intern, despite the fact that his family is well-connected and he comes from a wealthy family. He is the son of the late Charles Goodell, a former New York congressman, and U.S. Senator.

In 1987, Goodell was named assistant to the president of the American Football Conference, and he went on to serve in a variety of football and business operations jobs before being named Exe VP and Chief Operating Officer of the NFL in 2001.
