Early Life
Sally Dempsey (later McNeil) was born on May 29th, 1960, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and was raised in a violent household. When her mother was pregnant with Sally, her father kicked her in the stomach.
Following that, her mother remarried Richard Dale Dempsey, who was also abusive to her. As the abuse continued, it became routine for Sally. But, in order to get away from it all and get support, she turned to sports activities and athletics while in college.
Career
Sally was an exceptional athlete who competed in diving and cross-country running. Eventually, she enrolled at a college in Pennsylvania to pursue her dream of turning right into a well-being membership teacher.
Sally ran out of money, but with just one semester left, she dropped out of school, joined the Marine Corps, and adopted the footsteps of her brother and uncle. She then became a US Marine after becoming used to defending herself.
Ironically, after being discharged from the military, Sally pursued a wrestling career and adopted the moniker “Killer Sally.” In the late 1980s, she won the United States Armed Services Physique Championship twice.
Sally began bodybuilding at the time, and in February 1987, she competed in a novice-level competition, finishing fourth. Sally also competed in novice competitions such as the USA Championships, the North American Championships, and the NPC Nationals at the time.

At the time of Ray’s murder, he was also living with the McNeils. Sally met Ray McNeil, a bodybuilder himself, and they fell in love. In 1987, the couple married. Sally had already divorced her first husband, whom she claimed was abusive, at the time.

After numerous appeals on several grounds, including improper jury instructions, the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals initially overturned Sally’s conviction, leading to the granting of a writ of habeas corpus.
The 9th Circuit’s ruling was then overturned, and the case was sent back to that court for further proceedings after the State of California filed an appeal with the US Supreme Court. They reconsidered the case, relying on the SCOTUS decision, and issued an opinion in 2005.
They ruled in favour of the state and reinstated McNeil’s original conviction. McNeil was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton. McNeil was housed at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, California, where she served her sentence.
In May 2020, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation granted her parole. She claims Ray was consistently violent, fueled by anabolic steroids purchased with the money she earned from her wrestling career.
