Early Life
Shaquem Alphonso Griffin was born on 20 July 1995, in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Terry and Tangie Griffin. He was born less than 2 minutes after Shaquill Griffin, his twin brother was born. Shaquem had amniotic band syndrome since birth which caused his left-hand fingers to not fully develop.
The pain was so intense that at the age of four, he grabbed a butcher knife and planned to cut off his hand. His mother took the knife away from him, and his parents booked an amputation for the next day.
Shaquem was nevertheless able to compete in sports without his left hand, including track, baseball, and football, alongside his brother. Growing up, Griffin was an athletic and active child, participating in various sports such as football, basketball, and track and field.
High School Career
Shaquem attended and played high school football at Lakewood, where he was a safety. He also attended the 2011 Under Armor Combine. As a senior, he guided Lakewood to the Florida 5A regional playoffs in 2012.
