Early Life

Stephen Guy Vogt was born in Visalia, California on November 1, 1984, to Randy, an accountant, and Toni, the owner, and president of the PRISM Weight Loss Program. Vogt was born into a baseball family and his father was a pitcher at Fresno State.

Two of his uncles played at the University of California, Davis, including Mike Vogt, a member of the UC Davis Aggies’ All-Time Century Team. Randy Vogt coached Vogt and Danny through Little League and the Babe Ruth League when they were four years old.

When Vogt was nine years old, his coach encouraged the kids to go to whichever position they wanted to play; he initially rushed to the middle infield but switched to catcher after noticing that none of his colleagues had selected it.

Vogt’s father made his sons participate in two sports and two non-athletic activities at school. Vogt participated in baseball and basketball, Associated Student Body, choir, trumpet, and baritone horn through his second year of high school, and plays and musicals throughout high school.

His family would drive to San Francisco for Giants games multiple times a year, and they saw the franchise’s final game at Candlestick Park in 2000, its first game at Pacific Bell Park, and every game of the 2002 World Series at Pac Bell Park.

High School Career

Vogt attended Central Valley Christian Schools (CVC), where his father, Randy, had been the coach of the Cavaliers baseball team since 1998. He hoped to play baseball at Fresno State, where his father had previously played, but the school did not pursue him.

He was voted the East Sierra League’s Most Valuable Player in 2003. He set CIF Central Section records for career walks (79) and straight thefts throughout his four years at CVC (65). Vogt took part in Baseball Factory, Inc. showcases.

The recruiting coach sent a tape of Vogt to Azusa Pacific coach Paul Svagdis, and after watching Vogt take just three swings, Svagdis knew he wanted Vogt on the team and contacted to recruit him.

College Career

Vogt played catcher for the Azusa Pacific Cougars baseball team for four years. In 2005, Vogt was selected as the Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He hit.453 with 67 hits this season and ended in the top five in the conference in RBIs, doubles, triples, and total bases.

Vogt also had an on-base percentage of.582, 46 walks, and 15 strikeouts. Vogt finished third on the team in fielding percentage (.975) and threw out 14 of 39 base stealers. Vogt was a two-time NAIA All-American at Azusa Pacific and set ten school records.

He hit more than.400 in each of his four seasons and had an overall batting average of.448. His senior season effort helped the Cougars to a No. 2 national rating and a No. 1 seed in the World Series.
