Early Life
Alexandra Dawn a.k.a Ali Wong was born in San Francisco, California. She was the youngest of her four siblings. Tam a.k.a Tammy Wong, her mother, immigrated to the United States from Central Vietnam in 1960.
Wong graduated from San Francisco University in 2000 and she was the President of the Student Body Class. She applied at UCLA majoring in Asian American studies and came across her keen interest in performing as a member of the university’s LCC Theatre Company.
The theatre company was known to be the country’s biggest and oldest Asian-American college-affiliated theatre company In the summers, she worked at The Liar of the Golden Bear which is a UC Berkeley alumni summer family camp, and stuck around in Hanoi, during her junior year.
Career
23-year-old Wong, after her college graduation, attempted stand-up comedy at Brainwash Cafe and moved to New York City soon to be a professional comedian and started off by performing nine times a night.
Variety puts her name on one of the ’10 Comics to Watch list. She was invited to The Tonight Show, a New York stand-up show by John Oliver, and Comedy Underground show by Dave Attell. In the NBC comedy series Are You There, Chelsea cast Wong.
Ali Wong was also on VH1’s Best Week Ever and Hey Girl on MTV in 2013. Soon after, she worked as a star in Oliver Stone’s Savages and played a role as Kate in the movie Dealin’ With Idiots.

In 2014, in Black Box, the ABC medical drama series, Wong played the role of Dr. Lina Lark, apace with Kelly Reilly and Venessa Redgrave. She was also invited as a star guest in several episodes of Inside Amy Schumer.
Since 2014, Wong has written the script of Fresh Off the Boat. Randall Park is in the main cast and suggested Wong to be the perfect candidate for the writing role. Netflix released a Standup special: Baby Cobra on Mother’s Day 2016. In 2015, the special was shot at the Neptune Theatre.

The 2019 Netflix movie ‘Always Be My Maybe’ directed by Nahnatchka Khan and Wong, Park, and Michael Golamco as writers was a huge success. Wong also gave voice to the main character Bertie in the animated show entitled Tuca and Bertie on Netflix.
In 2019, Wong launched a book named ‘Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, and Advice for Living your Best Life. She says this book would act as a life guide for her two daughters when they become adults.

Wong met Justin Hakuta in 2010 who was the son of Ken Hakuta, a television figure, and inventor. They met at a mutual friend’s wedding. At healthcare startup GoodRx, Hakuta works as the vice president of products. In 2014, Wong and Hakuta got married and have daughters, Mari and Nikki.
