Richard Wayne Van Dyke was born on December 13, 1925, in The West Plains of Missouri, U.S. Regardless of being born in the West Plains, He spent most of his childhood in Danville, Illinois. Hazel Victoria, her mother was a Stenographer whereas his father Loren Wayne ‘Coolie’ Van Dyke was a Salesman. His parents had two children, he being elder to his brother, Jerry Van Dyke, who was an actor and appeared in The Dick Van Dyke Show.
In his early youth, Van Dyke considered a career in the ministry, though he’s keen interest in drama class in high school persuaded him to become a professional entertainer. He taught at Sunday school in the Presbyterian Church throughout his acting career. He was an elder at the church and also read theologians including Martin Buber, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Paul Tillich.

Van Dyke was a radio DJ in the late ’40s on WDAN in Danville, Illinois. He was then convinced to start a comedy duo called ‘Eric and Van – The Merry Mutes’ by Phil Erickson, a pantomime performer.
