De Vries grew up in New York and showed a passion for computers at a young age. He was born on June 29, 1972. His mother encouraged him to learn to dance in high school.De Vries attended Carnegie Mellon University and graduated in 1994. He taught himself to speak Japanese.

On October 13, 2021, de Vries accompanied William Shatner along with two other astronauts on a New Shepard rocket as part of the Blue Origin NS-18 mission into space. De Vries was killed in a small plane crash involving a Cessna 172 in Hampton Township, New Jersey on November 11, 2021. He was a certified private pilot with an instrument rating.

Vries is also the author of the book The Patient Equation. Applied Clinical Trials, Cancer, The Journal of Urology, and Molecular Diagnostics are just a few of the journals that have published his work.

The New Jersey State Police says the plane went down in a wooded area Thursday afternoon in Hampton Township, about 40 miles northwest of New York City. FAA records say a Cessna 172 — a four-seat airplane used for training and recreational flights — was involved in a fatal crash under “unknown circumstances in a heavily wooded area” Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board tweeted Thursday it is investigating the crash.
