Early Life

McGillis was born in Newport Beach, California, on July 9, 1957, and was born to Virginia Joan and Donald Manson. Her ancestry is Scott Irish, German, and Welsh.

Being raised in Los Angeles, she attended Newport harbor high school and went to the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Alan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. She got a GED and dropped out of high school and moved to New York City to study acting at the Juilliard School and graduated in 1983.

She first made her debut in the movie “Rueben” and had a breakout role in the movie Witness(1985) as an Amish mother for which she received a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award nomination. Her next big role was in the movie ‘Top Gun(1986),’ where she played a fighter pilot called Charlotte Blackwood.

She then went on to act in the film ‘Made in Heaven’ in 1987 which was a romance genre and subsequently played in the movie ‘The House of Carroll Street’ as a caretaker which was released in 1988. 

The same year she appeared in the movie ‘The Accused’ and in ‘Cat Chaser’ and was discouraged by her co-actor Peter Weller who told her to discontinue acting.

She worked with drugs and alcohol addicts at a rehabilitation center in Bridgeton, North Carolina. She taught acting at the New York Studio for Stage and Screen NYS3 in North Carolina and also currently resides there.

McGillis was sexually assaulted in New York City in 1982. The police could only catch one of the abusers while the other assailant could not be caught due to a lack of evidence.

McGillis was injured from a house invasion in 2016 after she was assaulted by a woman who broke into her house in North Carolina. She then applied for a concealed carry gun permit to protect herself from any future attacks.

A $1.5 million schooner burnt in a fire that was owned by McGillis and her former husband, Fred Tillman. The fire began in a boat adjacent to theirs in 1996 in Port Lau Dania Marina in the Dania Cut off the canal and instantly spread to their property. Tillman was hoping to sell the boat at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show as he bought it from their home, Key West.

McGillis entered into a Civil Union, similar to a marriage, with Melanie Leis who was a Philadelphia sales executive. They met when Leis was a bartender in 2000 at the Kelly’s Bar Grill and Brewery in Florida. They however dissolved the Union the following year due to personal reasons.
