Early Life

Paul Anthony Sorvino was born on 13 April 1939 in the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bensonhurst to Angela Maria Mattea, a homemaker and piano teacher, and Ford Sorvino, a foreman in a robe manufacturer.

After graduating from high school, Sorvino enrolled in the United States Navy and served as a sailor for several years. He attended Lafayette High School and took vocal lessons at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Career Beginnings

Paul Sorvino started working as a copywriter in advertising and he also trained in vocals for 18 years in order to pursue a career as an opera singer. He changed his mind while attending The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

He soon joined the stage and made his Broadway debut in the 1964 musical Bajour. Six years later, Sorvino made his film debut in Carl Reiner’s Where’s Poppa? In 1971, he appeared in the film The Panic in Needle Park, alongside Al Pacino and Kitty Winn.

Sorvino gained critical acclaim for his performance as Phil Romano in Jason Miller’s Broadway drama That Championship Season in 1972. In the film It Couldn’t Happen to a Nicer Guy, his character was deemed bold and risqué even for the modern 1970s.

Sorvino sparked controversy in 2005 when he worked with Lackawanna County on the film ‘The Trouble with Cali.’ He began filming and directing the film, which he meant to co-star alongside his daughter Mira Sorvino.

In 2006, a second $250,000 was added to the province’s first $250,000 donation. However, due to financial and legal issues, the film was never released in theatres. Eventually, The Trouble with Cali premiered in 2012, at the Sedona Film Festival.

It was just a few months after his 11-year denunciation of blatant debasement charges. Sorvino announced in 2015 that a Canadian company was interested in distributing the film but the deal fell through due to the film’s negative publicity.
