Early Life and Education
Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. was born on the 20th of June, 1949 to Lionel Brockman Richie Sr. and Alberta R. Foster in Tuskegee, Alabama. He went to Joliet Township High School, East Campus, for his studies.
He was the school’s top tennis player and received a tennis scholarship, but he dropped out of college to pursue a music career and make a name for himself in the industry.
Commodores
Richie formed a series of R&B ensembles while at Tuskegee University. He joined the Commodores in 1968 as a singer and saxophone. The band inked with Atlantic Records in 1968 for a one-record deal before joining Motown Records in 1969.
They performed as a support act for The Jackson 5. They have albums such as “Machine Gun” and “Brick House”. Richie’s romantic ballads, such as “Still,” “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Sail On,” became increasingly famous over the period.
His first commercial success as a songwriter came with the song “Happy People.” In 1980, he wrote “Lady” for Kenny Rogers, which hit Number 1, and the subsequent year, he produced Rogers’ album Share Your Love.

Personal Life
Richie wedded Brenda Harvey, his long-time girlfriend in 1975. Nicole Camille Escovedo (now Nicole Richie), the two-year-old daughter of a member of Lionel’s band, was adopted informally by the couple in 1983.
Harvey was arrested in 1988 after she discovered Richie at Diane Alexander’s Beverly Hills apartment and was convicted of corporal injury to a spouse, resisting arrest, trespassing, disturbing the peace, and others.
Richie and Harvey got divorced in 1993. In 1995, Richie wedded Diane Alexander. Miles Brockman and Sofia Richie are their two children and their marriage came to an end in 2004.
