Early Life
Derek Ryan Smith was born in Bloomington, Minnesota, on March 10, 1987. She spent a bit of time with his father in Long Beach, California after his parents were divorced. He migrated often from the age of five to ten since his mother had to relocate for various professions. Bud Gaugh, the drummer of Sublime, lived next door to Smith’s father and encouraged him to pursue a career in music.
Will Smith began designing apparel for bands in his local New Jersey pop-punk scene while he was in eighth school. His mother pushed him to go to concerts and to approach the traveling band members if they wanted to remain the night.
Smith as well as other local bands and musicians in the scene became more interested in fashion and emo culture in the following years, eventually becoming part of the scene subculture. He finished school from Thomas Jefferson High School.
Career
Smith began his career as a member of the Sideline Heroes, a pop-punk band. He was previously a member of the pop-punk band Four Letter Lie and the drummer for the post-hardcore band Scary Kids Scaring Kids.
He’s been drumming since his junior year in high school when he was a member of the Semester, a local band. He was booted out of Scary Kids Scaring Kids in 2009 and spent time peddling drugs while working as a drum tech for the band.
He agreed to take part in the ailment so that he could accompany them on tour as a solo performer. Over the course of his solo career, Mod Sun has released five mixtapes and three EPs.
