Kazuki Takahashi was born as Kazuo Takahashi in Japan on October 4th, 1961. Kazuki received his early education in Tokyo, Japan. Growing up, he was very fond of shogi, mahjong, and board role-playing games.

Career Beginnings

In 1982, Kazuki began his career as a manga artist. In an interview with Time For Kids in 2002, he recalled his first published work, but confessed he didn’t “want to think about it.” His first, published 20 years ago, was a cartoon comedy about a high school that was a complete flop.

Kazuki’s best-known early works were Tennenshoku Danji Buray and Fighting Hawk. Kazuki’s first published work, Fighting Hawk, was released in 1990. Kazuki’s debut serial in Weekly Shonen Jump was Tennenshoku Danji Buray, however, it only lasted two volumes.

Breakthrough

Kazuki’s career took off after the release of his Yu-Gi-Oh! manga series in 1996. Yu-Gi-Oh translates to “King of Games,” and the series featured the adventures of a young boy who overcame his rivals through riddles and games.

Several series were made for eight years until 2004, yet the series became well-known around the world as it expanded into a franchise. The popular Yu-Gi-Oh series has generated numerous animated films and spin-off shows, as well as video games and trading cards over the years.

According to the available reports, a US Army soldier was praised for saving three individuals from a riptide at a popular Okinawa dive area in an incident that allegedly killed a well-known Japanese manga artist.

Robert, a certified scuba diver, reportedly saw 3 people struggling in a dangerous riptide and ran out to help while still wearing his running shoes. Robert was able to guide both people to shore and then his fellow soldier back.

Witnesses report that manga artist Kazuki also jumped in to help during the rescue. The Japanese Coast Guard found his dead body the next day, on July 6, 2022, floating off the coast of Nago while wearing an underwater mask, snorkel, and fins.
