Tresvant began performing at local talent shows with his buddies Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins. Brooke Payne, a local up-and-coming producer, and composer spotted them.
Payne gave them the name New Edition after they auditioned, implying that they were a new version of the Jackson 5. Maurice Starr signed them to his own Streetwise Records label in the hopes of creating a “newer edition” of the pop group The Jackson 5. Popcorn Love, Is This the End, Jealous Girl, and the title tune were all major singles from their debut album Candy Girl, which was released in 1983.
New Edition departed Starr’s management and record company after a money dispute and signed with MCA Records. His self-titled debut album went double platinum after selling two million copies. The song titled Sensitivity, the lead single, lasted 20 weeks on the R&B Singles chart in the United States, including two weeks at the top. The Top 5 hit singles were also included on his album.
Tresvant’s vocals also appeared on the soundtracks for the films Mo’ Money and The Preacher’s Wife, and he made a cameo appearance in the film House Party 2, which featured his two singles for the soundtrack.

He has also appeared solo in the movies Barbershop Blues, Triple Cross, Behind RizzWaFaire, and Get on Up as well as with New Edition in Knight Rider, Krush Groove, and Girls Trip.
In 2008, he started touring and performing with the new band Heads of State alongside Johnny Gill and Bobby Brown. In addition to being a singer and actor, He is also a radio show DJ on Boston’s WZBR 1410 AM The BASS, and his show “Inside the Ride with Ralph Tresvant” debuted in 2016.
