Early Life

Billie Joe Armstrong was born on February 17, 1972, In Oakland, California, to Ollie Jackson and Andrew Marciano Armstrong, a jazz musician, and Safeway truck driver. At age 10, his father passed away from esophageal cancer.

His mother worked at Rod’s Hickory Pit in El Cerrito, California, as a waitress, where he and Mike Dirnt played their debut show in 1987. Marci, Hollie, Anna, David, and Alan are five siblings of Armstrong.

Armstrong went to Rodeo’s Hillcrest Elementary School. He attended Crockett, California schools Carquinez Middle School and John Swett School later Pinole Valley High School. He left school on his 18th birthday in order to pursue a career in music.

Career

In 1987, he founded the band “Sweet Children” with his childhood friend Mike Dirnt. While Sean Hughes played bass and John Kiffmeyer played drums, they played the guitar.

Dirnt took over playing bass after Hughes quit the band. Due to their marijuana addiction, the band changed its name to “Green Day” in 1989. Their debut EP, 1,000 Hours, was released the same year.

The following year, they finished recording 39/Smooth, their first studio album, as well as Slappy, an extended play. Both albums were included in the compilation titled, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.

In Green Day’s second album “Kerplunk” Tre Cool made his debut as a new drummer replacing Sobrante. With the release of their second album, the band entered the mainstream and sold more than 60 million albums worldwide.

With several musicians, Armstrong co-wrote songs. Some of these include Unforgiven by the all-female American rock group The Go- Go’s, The Angel and The Jerk, New Day, and Radio by the American punk rock band Rancid.
