In 1987, he founded the band “Sweet Children” with his childhood friend Mike Dirnt. While Sean Hughes played bass and John Kiffmeyer played drums, they played the guitar. Dirnt took over playing bass after Hughes quit the band. Due to their marijuana addiction, the band changed its name to “Green Day” in 1989.

Their debut EP, 1,000 Hours, was released the same year. The following year, they finished recording 39/Smooth, their first studio album, as well as Slappy, an extended play. Both albums were included in the compilation titled, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.
