The majority of his revenue comes from his music career with Bell Biv DeVoe and New Edition, as well as various R&B music tours, concerts, and a few solo projects. Bell is considered one of America’s best singers. Bell’s singing career is still thriving, despite recent drug troubles.

Early Life

Ricardo Bell was born on September 18, 1967, in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, to Dorothy Mae and Daniel A. Bell, and spent his early childhood days in the Orchard Park Projects. He is one of eleven siblings.

In 1978, Bell co-founded New Edition with his friends, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe. Bell was given the opportunity to go solo after the trio recorded Heartbreak but instead chose to join Bell Biv DeVoe. After Bobby Brown left New Edition in the 1980s, Johnny Gill joined the group.

Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD) was the first band to continuously combine elements of rap and R&B. Bell’s breakthrough performance in 1990 established him as a chart-topping lead vocalist. Bell began his career with New Edition as a backup vocalist, but he quickly rose to become one of the group’s most popular voices on singles.

Bell sang lead or co-lead on the rest of the group’s charting singles, except for the ensemble songs Hot2Nite and Hit Me Off and the Brown-led You Don’t Have to Worry. Bell has also performed in several TV and film projects with BBD and New Edition and also sang the BBD hit “Poison” alongside Ne-Yo at the 2009 BET Awards.

BBD released its first album in 15 years, Three Stripes, in 2017. To date, New Edition has released seven studio albums, two-holiday albums, eight compilation albums, and 29 singles, two of which are featuring singles.

Personal Life

Bell married actress Amy Correa in 2004, in a double wedding with Tresvant. In the mid-1990s, Bell battled substance abuse. Bell consumed marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, alcohol, and Oxycontin. To feed his addictions, he even went so far as to lose his home and sell all of his personal belongings.

He ultimately overdosed on cocaine and came dangerously close to death, leading him to enter rehab. Since finishing treatment from rehab, Bell has stayed sober. His addiction troubles were not made public until a miniseries was released in 2017.
