In 1978, Bell co-founded New Edition with his friends, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe. Bell was given the opportunity to go solo after the trio recorded Heartbreak but instead chose to join Bell Biv DeVoe.
After Bobby Brown left New Edition in the 1980s, Johnny Gill joined the group. Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD) was the first band to continuously combine elements of rap and R&B.
Bell’s breakthrough performance in 1990 established him as a chart-topping lead vocalist. Bell began his career with New Edition as a backup vocalist, but he quickly rose to become one of the group’s most popular voices on singles.
Bell sang lead or co-lead on the rest of the group’s charting singles, except for the ensemble songs Hot2Nite and Hit Me Off and the Brown-led You Don’t Have to Worry.
