Early Life

Wiggins was born on February 23, 1985, in Toronto, Ontario, and raised in Thornhill, Ontario. Andrew Wiggins is the son of the former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins and former Olympic field tracker Marita Payne Wiggins.

His parents met at Florida State University as student-athletes. He attended Glen Shields Public School and Vaughan Secondary School. He began playing professional basketball at the age of nine.

He led his high school basketball team winning the Ontario Provincial championship. In 2011, he transferred to Huntington Prep School, West Virginia, and played extremely well there too. NBA Draft

Wiggins was declared for the 2014 NBA draft and announced as the overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers, becoming the second Canadian to be picked after Anthony Bennett. It was in 2013, that a three-team trade was conducted comprising of Minnesota Timberwolves, Philadelphia 76ers, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Wiggins was picked by the Timberwolves.

He was the second player since the ABA-NBA merger to be drafted as the number one pick. He earned Rookie of the Month playing in his first NBA debut and also the Rising Stars Challenge MVP.

The following year in 2015 he was named, NBA Rookie of the Year. In November 2015, Wiggins scored a game-high of 31 points and a career-high of 33 points after two days and thus making his first 30-point game in his career.

Wiggins was soon traded by Golden State Warriors in exchange for Jacob Evans, Omari Spellman, and D’Angelo Russell. In the 2020 season, Wiggins once again made a debut with a season-high of 40 points.
