When James was a child, his entire family relocated to Boston, where he lived in a poorhouse with his parents, three younger sisters, and his grandmother.
He began reading while pursuing his B.A. in English at Manhattan College in the Bronx, and after encouragement from family and friends, he began writing, a hobby that would become his lifelong fascination.
James worked as an attendant at ‘Mclean Hospital’ in Belmont during the night shifts as a youngster to cover expenses for his higher education.
He went to Vanderbilt University in Tennessee to pursue a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English literature after finishing college. He dropped out after only a year because he believed his academics would kill his passion for literature and that the Ph.D. Itself was of little importance to him.
He moved to New York City in 1971 and, after being turned down for a cab driver job due to his long hair, he joined a leading advertising agency, as a junior copywriter. He began writing commercial fiction in the mornings before heading to work and during his lunch break at work, inspired by books such as “The Exorcist” and “The Day of the Jackal.”
He wrote his debut novel, ‘The Thomas Berryman Number,’ at the age of 26 and had it rejected by 31 publishers before being published by ‘Little, Brown and Company in 1976. The ‘Edgar Allan Poe Award for finest debut novel was given to him by the ‘Mystery Writers of America.’

In the “Discovery’s Murder is Forever” series, he has published numerous paperback books. The book titled “The President Is Missing,” penned by James and Bill Clinton, was published in 2018.
Patterson registered a 17-book agreement with HarperCollins in 2009, promising to publish or co-author six young adult fiction and 11 adult novels by the end of 2012. Despite “Forbes” reports that the contract was worth $150 million, James has stated that this is not the case.
The James Patterson PageTurner Awards were founded in 2005 to give away “cash prizes meant to recognize the individuals, corporations, schools, and other institutions who develop creative and efficient ways to promote the joy of reading books.”
His production company, James Patterson Entertainment, got first-look deals with CBS Television Studios in 2014 and Entertainment One in 2020. Patterson, along with other writers Stephen J. Cannell and Michael Connelly, starred as himself on “Castle” in 2009 and 2010, as one of the titular subject’s gambling pals.
His writings have also made it into the gaming world with the “Women’s Murder Club” PC titles “Death in Scarlet,” “A Darker Shade of Grey,” “Twice in a Blue Moon,” and “Little Black Lies,” as well as “Women’s Murder Club: Games of Passion” on Nintendo DS.
