Navarro went to Tufts University via scholarship and graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Arts.
He then spent his next three years at the U.S Peace Corps in Thailand. Navarro was able to earn a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Ph.D. in economics.
Navarro started as a research associate at the Harvard Energy and Environmental Policy Centre. He later moved on to teach Economics at the University of California and the University of San Diego. He taught at the University of California for more than 20 years and became a professor emeritus and worked on issues like energy and the relationship between USA and Asia.
Navarro received multiple accolades for his teaching and wrote a book titled ‘The Policy Game: How Special Interests and Ideologues are Stealing America,’ talking about worker’s compensation and helping those who lost jobs to foreign competition. His other publications include ‘Death by China,’ which is a controversial take on China and highly critical of their governance policies. He also directed and produced a documentary on the same.
Navarro’s political career began when he ran unsuccessfully at the office in San Diego five times in a row. His political positions and speech have been in the spotlight as a hot dispute due to him also being a registered Democrat. He was initially registered as a Republican in 1989 but changed to Democratic Party in 1994. Navarro was even endorsed by Hilary Clinton and supported Barack Obama’s Presidential Campaign.
He soon re-registered as a Republican and joined Trump’s administration in 2016. He advocated as a protectionist for American Foreign Policy and created an economic plan during the Trump Campaign titled ‘Economic Analysis of Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter.’
Navarro was soon elected as the Director of the White House National Trade Council and largely influenced the United States’ trade policy in the Trump Administration. Navarro was also appointed as the Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy and reported to the National Economic Council. However, he did not settle with this power as he wanted to influence more and have parity with the NEC Director as well.
Navarro was classified as controversial as he was largely in favor of Trump’s decisions and even conducted his own investigation in an op-ed by The New York Times that criticized the Trump government. Navarro has largely been a critic of trade with China and was cited by Bloomberg News as Navarro being a mainstream economist. He also stated that trade is a national risk and criticized the government for making foreign purchases.
Navarro was married to Leslie Lebon and divorced in 2020. The duo did not have any children but Lebon’s son from her previous marriage.
As of 2022, Peter Navarro’s net worth is estimated to be $5 million. Most of his income came from his political work and teaching at the University. He stands as one of the highest-paid assistants to the President for Trade and Manufacturing Policy and made at least $200,000 a year.
He recently made headlines and was charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to provide testimony and to cooperate in regard to the US Capitol Riot. He has also been an author of several publications and administered the Trump government.
