Early Life

Joseph James Rogan was born in the United States on August 11, 1967, in the city of Newark, New Jersey. Joseph, his father, is a retired Newark cop. His parents had divorced when Rogan was five years old.

Rogan attended Newton South High School in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, and graduated in 1985. In his early adolescence, Rogan played Little League Baseball and became interested in martial arts, karate, and Taekwondo.

He won the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament as a lightweight when he was 19 years old and was a four-time Massachusetts full-contact state champion and later became a Taekwondo instructor.

Rogan also competed in amateur kickboxing and had a 2–1 record; he retired from competition at the age of 21 after developing injuries. He enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Boston but dropped out early due to his dissatisfaction with the program.

Career

Rogan started his comedy career in Boston and went on to work as an interviewer and color commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He hosted the game show Fear Factor after releasing his first comedy special, I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday.

He also agreed to sign an exclusive partnership deal with Disney in 1994 and appeared on several TV shows, such as Hardball and NewsRadio. Rogan’s stand-up career took off after he left Fear Factor, and he continued to host comedy specials.
