Joseph James Rogan was born in the United States on August 11, 1967, in the city of Newark, New Jersey. Joseph, his father, is a retired Newark cop. His parents had divorced when Rogan was five years old. Rogan attended Newton South High School in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, and graduated in 1985.
In his early adolescence, Rogan played Little League Baseball and became interested in martial arts, karate, and Taekwondo. He won the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament as a lightweight when he was 19 years old and was a four-time Massachusetts full-contact state champion and later became a Taekwondo instructor.
