Lotfi Zadeh was born on 4 February 1921 in Azerbaijan. His father was an Iranian journalist, and his mother was a doctor of Jewish ancestry. He completed his elementary schooling in Ukraine, where his parents worked. When Zadeh was ten years old, the family migrated back to Iran.
