Lotfi Zadeh was born on 4 February 1921 in Azerbaijan. His father was an Iranian journalist, and his mother was a doctor of Jewish ancestry. He completed his elementary schooling in Ukraine, where his parents worked.

When Zadeh was ten years old, the family migrated back to Iran. He went on to graduate his high school from Alborz High School. He then went on to complete his graduation in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran in Iran.
