Richard Stevenson Parker Jr. was born on June 4, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, to actress Sarah Meade and investment advisor Richard Stevenson Parker Sr. She has appeared in numerous television commercials. Stevenson has a brother, Hutch Parker, who is a film producer.

When he was five years old, he accompanied his mother to a filming session, which led to opportunities to appear on television. However, his father discouraged him from acting and relocated his family to Rye, New York.

He attended Rye Country Day School and Brooks School when he was younger. After graduating from high school in 1971, Stevenson enrolled at Princeton University in New Jersey to study architecture and he also participated in a few play productions while a student at Brooks School.
