Early Life
Born Alfred Matthew Yankovich, he was born on October 23, 1959, in Downey, California. His father received two Purple Hearts for his service as a physician during World War II, who was of Serbian heritage and moved to California.
Just before Alfred’s sixth birthday, his parents enrolled him in a nearby music school. Alfred honed his accordion skills there. After a salesperson from the school arrived at their door to sell music education, Alfred’s parents decided on accordion.
That was over guitar because they believed it would change rock music. Al eventually took music lessons when he was seven years old. He subsequently discovered rock music and became enamored with it.
His favorite musicians included Elton John, Allan Sherman, and Spike Jones. He graduated from ‘Lynwood High School,’ where he was valedictorian in 1975. He earned a degree in architecture from California Polytechnic State University.
Career
In 2006, nearly three decades into his career, he dropped his first Billboard top ten albums (Straight Outta Lynwood) and song (“White & Nerdy”). His most recent album “Mandatory Fun” debuted at number one for the first time.
Yankovic’s success stems in part from his ability to effectively satirize pop culture through music videos. With the collapse of music television and the rise of social media, he began uploading his videos on YouTube and other video sites.
Later videos were directed by him, and he went on to direct videos for Ben Folds, Hanson, the Black Crowes, and the Presidents of the United States of America. Around the same time, he published his autobiography ‘The Authorized Al.’

He co-wrote and starred in the mockumentary ‘The Compleat Al,’ centered on his own life, in 1985. In 1988, he performed as the narrator for Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” Al wrote and acted in the 1989 video hit UHF.
In 1997, he was the host of the CBS show “Weird Al.” He’s also acted on programs such as ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (2011), ’30 Rock’ (2012), and ‘Drunk History’ (2014). ‘When I Grow Up’ and ‘My New Teacher and Me,’ are two kids novels he’s written.
In 2015, he was featured on the cover of the magazine ‘MAD.’ Al’s work has garnered him 5 Grammy Awards and 11 nominations, as well as 4 gold and 6 platinum albums.
