James Andrew Miller was born on August 30, 1983, in Sparta Township, New Jersey. He has two brothers. At the age of four, he started wrestling. He wrestled in college for one year at Virginia Tech.
He competed in wrestling in high school at Sparta High School. He has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Jamie Cruz at the moment. When he started working out with his brother, Dan Miller at Planet Jiu-Jitsu in Sparta, New Jersey.
In 2005, Miller started learning mixed martial arts. Jim and his brother Dan both worked in construction alongside their father before pursuing mixed martial arts as a career.

In 2005 at Reality Fighting, Jim Miller made his MMA debut. He won by a unanimous decision when he faced Eddie Fyvie. In his fourth match, he defeated Muhsin Corbbrey to claim the Reality Fighting Lightweight Championship.
He was defeated by veteran Frankie Edgar in two subsequent fights, dropping the belt by unanimous decision. Before Reality Fighting 14, Planet Jiu-Jitsu shut down. With his brother Dan, Miller started his training at AMA Fight Club in Whippany.
Additionally, he competed in the Cage Fury Fighting Championship, where he was successful in defeating Anthony Morrison and Al Buck. In 2008, Miller and his brother Dan joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Since Reality Fighting XII, Miller had never competed on the same card as his brother. At Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5, Miller successfully defended his light-heavyweight title.
