William Henry “Smush” Parker was born on June 1, 1981, in Brooklyn to William “Bill” Henry Parker II and Robin Royal Parker. He went to Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens, where he was a standout guard on the varsity basketball team.
He then enrolled as a freshman at the College of Southern Idaho for the 1999-2000 season before transferring to Fordham University to play college basketball. He entered the NBA in 2002 after his sophomore season at Fordham University but went undrafted.
Parker was not drafted out of college, but he was signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2002-03 season. Parker appeared in 66 games and averaged 6.2 points and 2.5 assists in his one season with the Cavaliers.
