Johnnie B. “Dusty” Baker Jr. was born on June 15th, 1949, in Riverside, California to Johnnie B., a defense industry worker, and Christine Baker, a professor. He got the nickname “Dusty” because he liked eating dirt from the family’s backyard.

Post-Playing Career
Baker started his coaching career with the San Francisco Giants in 1988. He began as a first base coach, then spent four years as the hitting coach before taking over as manager in 1993, replacing the departing Roger Craig.
Baker won the “NL Manager of the Year” award in his first season as manager, leading the team to a 103-59 record. Baker is currently one of only four African Americans to manage a World Series team. He is the club’s second-winningest manager in club’s history, trailing only Bruce Bochy.

Baker worked as an ESPN analyst during the 2006 MLB postseason and again the following season. Similarly, in 2015, he joined TBS as a studio analyst for the final two weeks of regular-season coverage as well as for coverage of the National League playoffs.
