Brandon Emil Phillips was born on June 28th, 1981 in Raleigh, North Carolina. His father, James Phillips, owns a baseball complex in Georgia. He has two siblings, Porsha Phillips, a WNBA player, and PJ Phillips, who manages a professional baseball team.

Career Beginnings

Phillips was a basketball and baseball player at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Redan High School retired his #7 jersey in December 2003. He was an amazing athlete in high school, earning a reputation for his skills throughout the state and the country.

Phillips’ favorite baseball player as a kid was Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin. Phillips was drafted as a shortstop by the Montreal Expos in the second round of the 1999 MLB draft after signing a letter of intent to play baseball and football at the University of Georgia.

Phillips’ immense potential became clear when he was named a Triple-A All-Star in 2005. The Cincinnati Reds needed a second baseman in 2006, so they traded for him at the start of the season.

He became only the third player in Cincinnati history to join the 30/30 club in just his second season with the Reds (30 home runs and 30 stolen bases). During his time in Cincinnati, He was a three-time All-Star, a four-time Gold Glove winner, and a one-time Silver Slugger award winner.

He became the first player in MLB history to have two three-run home runs, seven RBIs, and two stolen bases in the same game. Following this performance, the uniform and cleats he wore during that game were displayed in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Phillips signed a minor league deal with the Boston Red Sox in 2018 and was exchanged for cash and Tony Sanchez, of Triple-A Pawtucket. Phillips batted .304 in 38 games for Pawtucket and .304 in six games for the Class A Short Season Lowell Spinners.
