Career

While working as a production assistant for Real TV at first, Francis came up with the idea for Banned from Television. Real TV broadcasts footage of unusual incidents that were rarely covered in the conventional media.

Francis obtained the material through a licensing agreement, which he subsequently resold through infomercials. In 1998, the first Banned from Television video was published, with two sequels in the same year.

The assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio, the rampage of circus elephant Tyke, and the executions of Roberto Girón and Pedro Castillo, among other events, were all featured in the series. After seeing footage of female college students exposing their breasts during Mardi Gras and spring break while shooting Banned from Television, Francis became interested in filmmaking.

Francis ended the series after three films because he found watching them back-to-back too unsettling due to the brutal material. Francis’ next business venture “Girls Gone Wild” was fueled by this footage.

In 1997, Francis started the Girls Gone Wild business by using direct-response marketing, such as infomercials, to promote DVDs he had made. Girls Gone Wild grossed almost $20 million in its first two years.

The company also donated 100% of the proceeds from their Mardi Gras-themed DVDs to the Red Cross to aid Hurricane Katrina victims. Millions of dollars were made over the company’s lifetime.

In 2022, an episode of the TNT true crime anthology series Rich & Shameless titled Girls Gone Wild Exposed debuted. It includes testimonies from Joe Francis’ claimed victims as well as a taped verbal fight between Francis and his wife.

Four women sued Francis the following year, alleging that he had filmed them while they were minors. He represented himself until he was found in contempt of court and fined $2,500 for asking a plaintiff if she was a prostitute.

In 2003, officials in Panama City Beach, Florida stepped in to stop the filming of Girls Gone Wild, forcing Francis to file a lawsuit against them for infringing on his First Amendment rights.

Francis pleaded guilty to record-keeping offenses and was sentenced to community service and a $1.6 million fine. He was sentenced to 339 days in prison and had to pay almost $60,000 in fines.
