Manchin was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington, West Virginia. He is the second of five children. His parents are John Manchin and Mary. His father is of Italian descent and his mother was a Czechoslovakian immigrant.

On the August 28, Democratic primary he defeated former Democratic Congressmen Ken Hechler. In the general election, he defeated Republican businessman John Raese. He is been serving as a senior United States senator from West Virginia since 2010.
As a member of Congress, he is known for his bipartisanship with his republican colleagues on issues such as abortion and gun ownership. He is also a prominent opponent of policy proposals including Medicare For All.
