Patrick Wayne Swayze was born in Houston, Texas on August 18, 1952, to Patsy, an engineer, and Jesse Wayne (1925–1982), a dancer. He had four siblings. He came to New York City in 1972 to finish his formal ballet training.
It was at the Harkness Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet schools. During high school, he also played football in the hopes of receiving a college football scholarship, but a knee injury halted his career.
