James William Shue had previously run unsuccessfully for the U.S. Congress in New Jersey. Her mother Anne Brewster was a bank executive who served as vice president of the Chemical Bank Corporation’s private division.

Shue has a sister, Elisabeth who made early uncredited film appearances; he co-starred with her in Adventures in Babysitting and The Karate Kid. Shue graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, where he played soccer.

After that, he attended Dartmouth College, where he was an All-American soccer player. He spent the winter in Glasgow, where he studied and played soccer for Queens Park FC. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth in 1989.
