Early Life

Casey Affleck was born on 12 August 1975, in Falmouth, Massachusetts, to Christopher Anne Boldt, a Radcliffe and Harvard-educated elementary school teacher, and Timothy Byers Affleck, an auto mechanic, bookie, carpenter, electrician, janitor at Harvard University, and bartender.

Affleck worked as a stage manager, director, writer, and performer for the Theater Company of Boston in the mid-1960s. Growing up, his father was an alcoholic and he began acting by reenacting his happenings at home during role-play exercises at Alateen meetings.

Affleck and his older brother, Ben, lived with their mother and made weekly trips to see their father after his parents divorced when he was nine years old. On turning 10, traveled throughout Mexico with his mother and brother and learned Spanish.

At the age of 14, his father relocated to Indio, California, to a rehab center. He later started working as an addiction counselor there. When he saw his father again while visiting California as a teenager, Affleck claimed that he was completely a different man.

High School Life

Affleck and his brother were exposed to people who worked in the arts while growing up in a politically involved, liberal family in Central Square, Cambridge. Their mother frequently took them to the theatre, and they were encouraged to make their own home movies.

Because of their mother’s connection with a local casting director, the brothers occasionally appeared in local weather ads and served as extras in films. While attending Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Affleck participated in a number of high school theatre plays as an actor.

For people who have… had curve balls thrown at them, it is easier to digest change and digest change in other people. Change only scares the small-minded. The small-minded and me. If I can’t see the humor in it, how am I going to be funny?.”
