When Powell was in college he joined the Reserved Officers Training Corps and he even earned a commission as an Army Second Lieutenant. Just after that, he was assigned to the 48th Infantry as a platoon leader in West Germany. He even did a tour in Vietnam as a South Vietnamese advisor from 1962 to 1963.
In 1968, he served as assistant chief of staff of operations for the 23rd Infantry division. He even received the Soldier’s Medal for bravery after he survived the helicopter crash and also rescued three other people from the wreckage.
