Gabourey Sidibe was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on May 6, 1983, to cab driver Ibnou Sidibe and Alice Tan Ridley, who competed in America’s Got Talent’s fifth season in 2010. She grew up in Harlem. Sidibe was raised with her aunt Dorothy Pitman Hughes, a feminist activist.

She attended City College of New York and Mercy College but did not finish. She received an associate’s degree from the Borough of Manhattan Community College. She worked as a receptionist at The Fresh Air Fund prior to pursuing a career in acting.
