Early Life
Liles was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 27, 1968. He studied at Woodlawn High School and was raised by his mother and stepfather and grew up with his three siblings. He went to graduate from Morgan State University with a degree in engineering and attained a scholarship from NASA but dropped out of the program to pursue a career in music.
Career
Liles began his career in music by joining the Baltimore-based DJ group, Numarx. They wrote and sang the single ‘Girl You Know It’s True,’ which was later covered by Milli Vanilli.
The song became Multi-platinum and an award-winning single. Liles took this as his first step to entering the Music industry confidently. Liles decided to start his own record label called ‘Marx Bros,’ which released several hit songs by Numarx.
The label endorsed artists such as Salt ‘N Pepa, LL Cool J, Run DMC, and many other popular artists. Liles wasn’t entirely happy with the progress as he wanted to do more.
He then finally got the opportunity to become the President of Def Jam Music Group in 1999. This became a subsidiary of the well-known Universal Music Group and grew at a large rate for the next four years.
