Early Life and Education
On February 13, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, Michael William Krzyzewski was born to Emily M. and William Krzyzewski. He went to St. Helen Catholic School before moving on to Archbishop Weber High School.
K, a top basketball player in high school, decided to join the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He was a senior captain for the Army basketball team, where he competed under Bob Knight. Following graduation, Krzyzewski went on to serve in the US Army for 5 years.
Career and Successful Wins
During the 1974-75 season, Mike got his first break in the coaching career to assist Bob Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers team. The following year, he was recruited as the Army Cadets’ head coach which lasted for five years.
Mike Krzyzewski became the head coach of Duke University in 1980. The Blue Devils quickly established themselves as a regular participant in the NCAA tournament, earning 35 invitations over the next 39 years including 24 times in a row from 1996 to 2019.
The Blue Devils have the second-longest string of playoff appearances in antiquity, trailing only the Kansas Jayhawks. Krzyzewski surpassed his old coach Bob Knight’s record of 903 Division 1 victories in 2011.

Krzyzewski announced his decision to retire in 2021, at the end of the 2021–22 season. In 2022, Krzyzewski’s final match at Cameron Indoor Stadium was a 94-81 defeat to the North Carolina Tar Heels.
