Luke Skyler Rockhold was born on October 17, 1984, in Santa Cruz, California. He belonged to an athletic family and his parents are Diana Rockhold, an avid tennis player, and Steve Rockhold, a professional basketball player in Europe.

Rockhold has an older brother, Matt Rockhold who is a professional surfer. From the age of 6 until 10, he began judo training. He attended Soquel High School, where he joined the wrestling team in the 7th grade and continued playing the sport while also taking jiu-jitsu training.

Rockhold wrestled for a local community college before committing to jiu-jitsu full-time with his historical coach, Gaetano Mortaccitua. He chose to pursue mixed martial arts after winning a few BJJ tournaments.

In 2006, Rockhold was invited by a friend to train at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, California, and after seeing his raw talent and kicking displays, AKA head coach Javier Mendez praised Rockhold as a potential future champion.
